The Knox School Welcomes New Varsity Basketball Coach Gordon Thomas
The Knox School is thrilled to announce the appointment of Coach Gordon Thomas as the new Varsity Boys Basketball Coach. Coach Thomas, a Long Island native, brings a wealth of experience from both public and private school athletics to our school community.
Gordon Thomas has an impressive athletic background, beginning with his standout high school career at Bay Shore High School. There, he led the Marauders to several championships, averaging 24.6 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists per game in his senior year. Recognized as a Newsday All-Long Island player and a high school All-American, Thomas also excelled in track & field as a 6’9” high jumper.
Recruited by numerous colleges, Thomas chose St. John’s University, where he was coached by legendary Hall of Fame coach Lou Carnesecca. After graduating with a BA in Athletic Administration, he was selected in the NBA draft by the New York Knicks and continued his professional basketball career in Caracas, Venezuela.
In addition to his professional achievements, Gordon founded the Alzheimer’s All-Star Basketball Classic in memory of his father, Detective John Edward Thomas Sr., the first African American Police Officer in Suffolk County. This initiative has become one of the premier fundraising competitions in the tri-state area, raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s disease.
Thomas’s coaching career is equally impressive. At Amityville Memorial High School, he led the Warriors to a New York State Championship in his second year and earned the title of New York State and Newsday’s Long Island Coach of the Year honors. His remarkable record includes 95 wins, three league championships, two overall Suffolk County championships, and a New York State Class A Championship.
For the past two years, Thomas has served as the Assistant Coach for the Southampton Mariners. Now, he is eager to bring his expertise and passion for the game to The Knox School.
Coach Thomas will be working alongside our Head Coach and Director of Athletic Advancement, Jared Grasso. Together, they are set to form a dynamic duo, poised to elevate the level of competition and prestige of Knox basketball.
